Sunspot Jonz – Fight-Destroy-Rock (2009)

3 04 2009

Sunspot Jonz presents Fight-Destroy-Rock in the spirit of UHB! Fight-Destroy-Rock! (aka UHB6) features guest appearances by Luckyiam & Myka9, Equipto, White Mic, & Kwanz (from Bored Stiff), Z-Man, Hymnself, Moka Only, & DWP.

And here’s what Sunspot wrote about this project: “This is that raw underground shit! It’s that “straight out the house” mix like old four track songs in the early UHB days. Who knows about “Unsigned and Hella Broke”!! Like back in the day when I would be at the outhouse and would mix songs down on my lil tv speakers and then hit the block slanging out the box. That was that real underground shit!! Where you take the bus to some place and ya broke and have to sell ya albums or you had no money to get back home-or even eat lunch. It sucked if it went bad sometimes but Fuck a 9-5! It was all about creating a grind and making that shit pop! That was that really “really”-ya know! On this project I used a fucked up microphone, my mpc, the 1680, and my janky ass protools that kept breaking sometimes for months (thats why I had to revert to the 1680) but still I made some great songs through it all. That true hip hop!! I wanted to bring back that old school underground passion that can’t always be recaptured in a big studio but always shows up in a smaller home studio. Like the “Sunnyside Halfway House” in LA , California which always has a host of characters coming through its doors with blunts and bottles in their hands. So strap in and get ready for the ride — now sometimes the sound is gonna jump up, overdubbs are too low too loud, people making noise walking in with bottles of alcohol whatever — you never know. That’s that raw shit!! KEEP THE UNDERGROUND ALIVE !! SPEAK FROM THE HEART OR DIE!!”

Kankick has made a name for himself in the West Coast hip-hop scene alongside fellow Oxnard natives Madlib and Oh No, crafted laidback, smoky instrumentals, occasionally releasing an album with guest spots (”From Artz Unknown”).

“Beautiful: Opus of Love Deeper Than Flesh” continues Kankick’s tradition of low-key loops and fuzzed-out jazziness. “Thursdays at the Good Life” rocks a lounge piano and background bells, “Black Women Candle Wax” uses a little static to augment the simple synth melody, and a river of bubbling crowd noise percolates under the mellow loop that powers “Continued Togetherness.”

Piano figures heavy on “Beautiful,” and some of Kankick’s best work throughout the disc’s 58 minutes is anchored on lilting, mid-range keywork (”NightTime Beauty,” “Serenade the Outdoor Visitors,” and what kind of sounds like an electric piano played in reverse on “OX Coming at Ya”).

If you’re looking to get your party started, “Opus of Love Deeper Than Flesh” might not be quite the right vehicle. But once the party’s winding down, and you and your people are just settling in during the late night hours, it’s the perfect accompaniment for slowly nodding your head and drifting into a daze on the couch.

Two and a half years went since the first album by Vaiperis and Serumas called “Cafeteria” (ex “Coffeteria”). A year ago it was released on vinyl in limited numbers.

The new fruit of “Despotin’ Fam” is called “Cafeteria Inn Legend”. It’s a fully finished album that requested a lot of hard work and sleepless nights from the authors. You may find influences of funk and jazz, the golden era of hip-hop and the almighty Detroit’s soul bank. “Cafeteria Inn Legend” describes the nowadays with beats and nu jazz scene together with English dubstep phenomena. Album consists of live instrumentals, city rhythms and electronics.

“Cafeteria Inn Legend” is only an appetizer before the main dish – “Despotin’ Fam” album, which is being finalized.

Blue Sky Black Death, a production duo, is a fairly new to the game, but they bring to the table years of experience. This album, an instrumental album, samples all they’ve got, and for that it’s pretty amazing. There’s a great range of samples, moods and tones set throughout the album making it refreshing and never stale. Interestingly enough, the beats don’t loop like some instrumentals do – most of them are original and fresh throughout (most songs, the beat and tone and everything changes mid-track), making it perfect for enjoyment in the background, while at work, or just by itself.

PRAXIS

9 07 2008

Artist – Praxis
Album – Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis)
Personnel:
Buckethead (guitar)
Bernie Worrell (keys)
Boosty Collins (bass)
Brain (drums)
Af Next Man Flip (turntables)
Dj Disk (turntables)
Year – 1992
Label – Axiom
Genre – metal hip-hop funk radioactive rock collage with undercurrents of ambidronoisabilly

Apart from an early experimental 12″ that has little to do with the later records, Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis) was the first release of producer Bill Laswell’s Praxis project, which he conceived and constructed around mystery guitar virtuoso Buckethead. Beautifully packaged (fascinating artwork by James Koehnline, freaky photography by Thi-Linh Le, and rebellious liner notes by Hakim Bey), this disc presented a band of top musicians at their most creative: apart from Buckethead, there are P-Funkers Bootsy Collins (bass) and Bernie Worrell (keyboards), plus drummer Brain (aka Brian Mantia) and turntable wizards Af Next Man Flip (aka Afrika Babybam from the Jungle Brothers) and Dj Disk (Skratch Piklz). From the searing heavy metal riffs that open the disc to the spaced-out noise collage that ends it, the band covers lots of territory: metal, rock, funk, hip-hop, jazz, noise intermezzos, back and forth, crossbred and interlocked. The first two tracks, “Blast/War Machine Dub” and “Interface/Stimulation Loop,” change from heavy metal to funk effortlessly. The third, “Crash Victim/Black Science Navigator,” turns from a breakneck-paced metal riff into a hip-hop scratching orgy without a second thought. “Animal Behavior” is certainly the most accessible track on the disc, relentlessly funky and featuring funny vocals by Bootsy. The second part of the track is a haunting ballad that points to Buckethead’s later accomplishments on his solo release Colma. “Dead Man Walking,” “Seven Laws of Woo,” and “The Interworld and the New Innocence” are showcases for Buckethead’s dangerous guitar shredding, alternating between majestic and breathless. “Giant Robot/Machines in the Modern City/Godzilla” prepares for the big showdown, with lots of mean guitar riffs standing against weird sounds and effects. The last track, “After Shock (Chaos Never Died),” then delivers an unusual outro by letting the rock-ish intro quickly dissolve into a strange sonic collage, featuring Worrell’s Hammond organ improvisation augmented by heavily treated noises and sounds, scratches, and tape manipulations. In fact, the last track (which runs well over 15 minutes) may be the only thing that will put most listeners off, but in fact this track is the icing on the cake — like the liner notes read, “Chaos Is Not Entropy…Chaos Is Continual Creation.”

DELTRON 3030 SAMPLES

9 07 2008

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, three homies named Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Dan the Automator and Kid Koala merged into the form of Deltron 3030, protectors of the free world. Okay, okay, enough with my fan-fiction steez. But Deltron 3030, released in the dawn of the new millenium, may have been the most influential hip hop album of the 21st century if you think about it. The project paved the way for the formation of the Gorillaz, propelling the image of a world comprised of iTunes and iPods. The album is also infamous for it’s subject matter and thematic style. But when it comes down to it, Deltron 3030 was just a funky, eerie, trippy, psychedelic trip into the reaches of the unknown; and it became an underground/trip hop/indie classic. The samples on this joint are all over the place, strictly off the wall. Sh*t, it’s even got a skit/song from ol’ school Sesame Street episodes (I kid you not)! Make sure you cop this sample set. And if you haven’t heard the original album, you have absolutely no excuse not to anymore because it’s just been re-issued courtesy of Traffic Entertainment/Hieroglyphics Imperium. The instrumental album is also out there too . Now enjoy the show:

KEEP IN TIME REMIXES

9 07 2008

Various- Keep In Time Remixes (2004)

(Source) There’s a long story here and in large part it’s the story of rhythm in the 20th Century. And being as you wouldn’t be miles off the mark if you saw those years as the Rhythm Century, that’s the story of the century. So bear with us – it’s worth the effort.

Unlikely as it may seem, our tale begins in the late ‘90s with photographer, film-maker and writer Brian Cross, more commonly known as B+. Irish-born, B+ had moved to LA in 1990 to get a Masters from CalArts and to feed his love affair with hip-hop. The results of his love affair were as diverse as his classic written overview of LA hip hop, “It’s Not About A Salary” and the promo video for DJ Shadow “Midnight In A Perfect World”.

But B+ was also fascinated with where the raw material of hip-hop – the break – and where it came from. He conceived a project where he would bring together and photograph four Los Angeles residents who had contributed to the history of music through their work behind the drum kit. The four men were Roy Porter, Earl Palmer, Paul Humphrey and James Gadson. Between them they spanned the history of post-War music, having played with everyone from Charlie Parker to James Brown, John Coltrane to Marvin Gaye, Frank Zappa to David Axelrod, Frank Sinatra to Beck.

Sadly, it took B+ some time to get the funding together for the project and by the time Tokion magazine approved the shoot in the year 2000, Roy Porter was dead. Nevertheless, the shoot went ahead, with the likes of DJ Shadow in attendance and members of the hugely influential DJ team the Beat Junkies and Cut Chemist on hand to jam with Humphrey and Gadson. The fruits of this meeting were captured by Cross on film and the resulting short, “Keepintime: Talking Drums Whispering Vinyl” toured the film festivals of the world to considerable acclaim, as well as DJ Shadow using it as the introduction of his critically acclaimed multi-media tour in support of “The Private Press” album.

But B+ wasn’t finished yet. All the participants were so energised by the exercise that he decided to bring them all together for a huge live show in Los Angeles, where DJs and producers including Madlib and NuMark (Jurassic 5) would jam live and create music with these two great drummers. The immediate results of these two unique events are captured here for the first time on DVD. But even then, the man behind the project wasn’t finished.

He now sent out the recorded multitrack parts from the live show to a host of the world’s finest producers, who built on the rhythms and added their own individual touches to create a cd of truly epic proportions. A constant work in progress, with producers ringing from all over the world begging to get involved, “Keepintime: A Live Recording” is a document of a collision between rhythm cultures, a truly vibrant artefact.

You will find new work here from a host of great names: DJ Shadow (one humurous cut-up built around the singular fact that a mistake by the soundman at one point obscured Madlib’s contribution to proceedings plus the more Shadowesque “Roy’s Theme”), King Britt (his 10 minute broken epic is definitely a highlight), Cut Chemist, Charlie Dark (Blacktronica/Attica Blues), Ammoncontact, , Daedelus and J-Rocc.

But more than any particular contributor what make’s this record great is the thematic unity, the rhythmic brilliance of the two drummers who lie at the roots of the work and last, something which King Britt captures and samples. Half way through his mix the compere for the night can be heard stating that, “this project is about love.” Believe.

KEEP IN TIME

9 07 2008

First of all, if you missed the post where I uploaded the CD that accompanied the DVD and also the story behind the event itself, check out this POST. The DVD does have some extras and I was having trouble sorting that out and since then I just haven’t gone back to redoing those. I think I need another couple of hours in each day to get everything done when I’d like to. For now, this is the main video and is split in two parts. Now that I’m using another program for splitting there should not be any more sync issues. The main video here is almost 50 minutes in length. It’s a full on freestyle concert with some very talented turntablists and super talented drummers who’ve had distinguished careers but have not gotten the recognition from the younger generations they deserve. Now they get to showcase their talents and inspire today’s great turntablists to explore new dimensions in the art form. For any real music fan, this is a treat to watch–guaranteed enjoyment!!!
