N.Y. Oil (originally known as Koom Kim back in the ’90s [thanks DMXXX!]) first “blew up” (he’s nowhere near mainstream at this point) with his extremely controversial video for his single “Y’all Should All Get Lynched.” The song, taking shots at black rappers who use the game for money rather than moral enhancement was paired with a gruesome video and pictures of lynchings. This was quickly banned by YouTube, replaced with a much more tame animated version, sans lynchings. N.Y. Oil is quite controversial, and he likes it that way. Interspersed between the songs are interludes and every now and then a spoken word segment, which add nice variety and bring a part of true poetry to hip-hop in this album. It also explains his reasoning for certain comments on the album, which I think is better than having rappers claim some sort of moral wrongdoing in society and not explain why they think so or what we can do to fix it. All in all, this is one powerful listen.

Can I Borrow A Dollar? shows Common’s earlier style of rapping; namely a sing-songy and inflection-heavy vocal delivery, as well as lyrics packed with wordplay and popular culture allusions. The album’s production, utilizing samples, keyboards, and drum breaks prominently, tends to be minimalistic, jazzy and laid back. The Source called the production top notch. Although receiving a lukewarm reception, Stanton Swihart of Allmusic considers it to have put Chicago hip hop on the map and to be an underrated debut album.

This is the debut ep of labtekwon aka omar akbar. this came out in ‘93 on black owned records and has six productions from ‘92/’93 on it.

“I made my first record in 1993, the Ghetto Gospel EP. It was released on Black Owned Records. 6 songs, 23 styles. I recorded the pre-production at Scotty B’s studio in 1992.”

i have to admit, this record was a real random buy a few years back. but while listening to this ep again and again, it became a real grower– for me at least. the kick off with “quiet storm” is perfect and at the same time my personal favorite followed by “csd”. all of these tracks come rugged and rough and have a funky note as well.  make sure to check this holy grail out!

DELTRON 3030 SAMPLES

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, three homies named Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Dan the Automator and Kid Koala merged into the form of Deltron 3030, protectors of the free world. Okay, okay, enough with my fan-fiction steez. But Deltron 3030, released in the dawn of the new millenium, may have been the most influential hip hop album of the 21st century if you think about it. The project paved the way for the formation of the Gorillaz, propelling the image of a world comprised of iTunes and iPods. The album is also infamous for it’s subject matter and thematic style. But when it comes down to it, Deltron 3030 was just a funky, eerie, trippy, psychedelic trip into the reaches of the unknown; and it became an underground/trip hop/indie classic. The samples on this joint are all over the place, strictly off the wall. Sh*t, it’s even got a skit/song from ol’ school Sesame Street episodes (I kid you not)! Make sure you cop this sample set. And if you haven’t heard the original album, you have absolutely no excuse not to anymore because it’s just been re-issued courtesy of Traffic Entertainment/Hieroglyphics Imperium. Harking back to the Golden Age ™, when every other record had a Pete Rock remix, I present to you the first sightings of the man.

Each track is a nice big ole fat slab of Mr Rock at his best and together with CL Smooth (the ‘C’ stands for Corey but what about the ‘L’?) in the mic it’s a solid partnership. Any 12″ from the first album is worth picking up.

With so much good stuff just oozing out of each track they are one of my happiest memories of this era.
